Will global cooling cancel out global warming?
I was surfing through some news stories the other day when I came across one about global cooling. Which kind of surprised me since the last I heard or read we are supposedly experiencing a period of global warming that has become so severe, the ice caps are melting and polar bears are drowning.
I do vaguely remember that way back in the 70’s certain scientists were concerned about global cooling, and predicting if things didn’t change, then one day in the not so distance future we would experience another ice age. Apparently things did change, because by the time the 90’s rolled around certain other scientists were convinced the earth was experiencing a global warming phenomena that was going to cause massive melting of the polar ice caps.
While keeping in mind all the recent hoopla I have read about global warming, the ice caps melting, and polar bears drowning, I began to read the story about global cooling. It seems something called spin-orbit-coupling is affecting the rotation rate of the sun. Even after reading the story I couldn’t figure out exactly what spin-orbit-coupling is. But, if spin-orbit-coupling is real, and continues to affect the rotation of the sun, then sometime during the next decade activity on the sun will significantly decrease, and remain decreased for 20 to 30 years.
Now for the good news. A team of German climatologists published some research which says that due to “natural effects” global warming would halt for up to 15 years.
The muse and I pondered those stories for a little bit, and knowing what a difference 15 years can make in scientific findings and research, we came to the conclusion that by then, some scientist might say that global cooling has cancelled out global warming completely. If that happens, then we can stop worrying about the ice caps melting, polar bears drowning, and Florida falling into the sea. Of course, at that point we may have to start knitting sweaters and preparing for that ice age they predicted back in the 70’s. That’s assuming we haven’t all died off from a combination of a nuclear war, cancer, mad cow disease, and food poisoning from tomatoes, peppers and other assorted fruits and vegetables.
