Is the net really going to wind up a package deal?

According to an I Power story I stumbled upon this morning, the net as we know it is heading for oblivion. If the story I read is true, then some major internet providers want to package access to the internet and sell it much the same way they have cable tv. The reviews for that story were mixed. Some seem to think the people responsible for the story know what they are talking about, and if we the people of the net don’t do something soon, we are all going to wind up with the net served up to us in not so great package deals. Others reviewing the story seemed to think the young folks responsible for this story belong in the coop with Chicken Little. I’m taking a middle of the road, do some more research, watch and see attitude towards this story for now. I did join the movement though. After all, if this story does turn out to be true, and those blasted big buck ISP companies are really intent on packaging the net, then by golly I want to be at the forefront of any movement intent on stopping that nefarious scheme dead in its cyber tracks.

The scary thing about this story is that I wouldn’t put it past the blasted big buck ISP providers to try and package and sell the net at a price that is right for them, but very costly to their customers. And by costly, I don’t just mean in terms of the monthly bill. I would like to agree with one of the people who reviewed the story and be able to believe people would never go for net access being packaged and sold like cable tv. Unfortunately, I am of the belief that way too many people, especially those signing up for internet access for the first time and who don’t know any better, might just go for such a deal.

I also can’t help but think that certain members of the Religious Reich might find the whole concept of packaged internet service some sort of not so divine intervention that would keep unsaved souls away from sites they feel do nothing but corrupt those visiting them.

I suggest those reading this blog entry Click Here and read the story, then form your own opinion about it. After all, isn’t being able to read interesting stories from all kinds of neat sites, and forming our own opinions about those stories part of what the net is really all about? If you decide the story is true, then join the movement and help put a stop to plans to package the internet. If you think the folks at I Power belong in the coop with Chicken Little, then by all means review the story and let your feelings be known. If you are right, then your viewpoint will never be unavailable for viewing because somebody’s package deal didn’t include the I Power site in it. But if you are wrong…….
