Sunny compromises

West Texas experienced some gloriously warm winter days last week with temperatures sometimes reaching the high 70’s and even low 80’s at times. I shamelessly took advantage of that fantastic weather by shucking my clothes and soaking up some of those warm winter rays. But because of all the hoopla about how bad too much sun is for my skin, I reached a compromise when it comes to my love of sunshine vs its ill effects on my aging skin. I soaked up the sunshine I love so much only in very brief periods, and usually as early in the morning as possible. I kept the sessions to brief 15 minutes on each side intervals. Used lots of lotion with sunblock in it while sunning, and applied of gobs of mineral lotion or body butter afterwards. My brief sunning sessions have given my skin a lovely touch of sun kissed color, without adding anymore wrinkles to my aging skin.

Minimizing and reducing the wrinkles I already have, as well as preventing as many future wrinkles as possible, while still allowing myself to indulge in some decadent moments has become the name of the game for this aging Crone. Compromise and balance is the key to being able to do that. Little things like the two cokes a day I still allow myself, and brief sunning sessions when weather permits keep my spirit in good shape, while still maintaining my aging body in a manner that insures those fine lines and wrinkles I’m fighting have a tough time winning the battle of age.

As I sat sipping my green tea and writing those words, I had what passes for a profound moment for me when I was suddenly struck by the thought that a lot of the economic ills now plaguing our planet could have been prevented had the people responsible for those ills been willing to settle for a life of comfort and plenty, instead of excessive extreme. Living the good life is no sin, but living a life of such excess it eventually helps contributes to the downfall of the global economy is in my eyes, very much a sin against all those who struggle to make ends meet. I just hope that when we do finally come out of this frightening economic crises we are in, those who did help contribute to it learn their lesson well, and in the future are willing to settle for a life of comfort and plenty, instead of one of excessive extremes.

Having survived that profound moment, my mind began to wander back to its usual state of frivolous disorder. Though somewhere along the way back, it did wonder if the Tasmanian Devils were going to become extinct because of a contagious face cancer now plaguing them? That’s a very interesting story. I’m not sure if the fence thing is going to work. And was saddened that also contributing to the decline of Tasmanian Devils are foxes that the English settlers introduced because they found the natural fauna of Australia too boring, and wanted to recreate a English countryside.

Will you look at what I’ve gone and done? I started out shamelessly exposing my tanning secrets, and discussing keeping decadence and healthy living in balance. Then went and profoundly pondered our current economic ills, as well as one of Australia’s current environmental issues. That green tea is some good stuff. Must be all those antioxidants in it. I wonder what indulging in a pomegranate pizzaz and cookies moment would do for me right now? I think I’ll go find out.
